Why I Write– George Orwell 1946

A beautifully written short essay that everyone who writes should read.  At one point Orwell lays out the four main reasons people write.   This one leaped out at me:

(iii) Historical impulse. Desire to see things as they are, to find out true facts and store them up for the use of posterity.
