On the A Train
I see a young woman reading on the downtown A, a look of Woody Allenish existential nausea on her face. After a moment I make out the title of the book she’s feebly highlighting sections of: Essential Lawyering Skills.
Giant Sloth
Howdy Namibia and Indonesia
Waiting for Luck
Nice idea, like waiting for lightning to hit you.
Love Alone Should Sustain You
Of course.
But as I often was obliged to say to the black robed political appointees I used to shuffle for, “‘Should‘ is a word one should not use in connection to (acronym of inept city agency here)”. This sometimes drew a sour smile from the person in the black robes.
Love of a thing will only take you so far, though it should, of course, always sustain you. After a while, as Picasso pointed out, without some real world payment– which may come in a variety of coins– you will eventually reach the point… oh, never mind.
The Darkness
Went to bed early, for me, after a day of exhaustion
This darkness, I thought at one point,
either the black
that proverbially comes just before dawn
or a tasteless prelude to the darkness that goes on
as dark now as 1,000 years from now.
A fucker with a kennel of power tools
started barking under my window
a few hours later,
put an end to that right away
Packet of Poems
A packet of poems arrives in the box
I read them throughout a wasted day
during which, at one point in my paralysis,
I wonder about medication
medication I know to be a crock
based on false tests,
creating as much misery as it purports to cure
enriching powerful
multi-billion dollar snake oil operations.
In the poems a worldview
Amazing, really, since the poet is a kid
I find myself writing in the guy’s cadence
what next, that MacArthur I’ve been banking on?
Hello, Cambodia!

We are very sorry for Henry Kissinger
